LAHORE – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Wednesday took a test ride of the province’s first Super Autonomous Rapid Transit (SRT) system in Lahore. She monitored the road test up to Muslim Town while traveling among regular public traffic. The SRT is a fully electric, eco-friendly urban train developed with modern technology.
During the test drive, Transport Minister Bilal Akbar briefed the CM on the train’s features. Maryam Nawaz inspected the train’s facilities, including air-conditioning and onboard passenger systems. Residents along Raiwind and Canal Roads expressed joy as the sleek SRT train passed by. The system has already proven successful in countries like Turkey, China, and the UAE.
The current train has three carriages, with space to add a fourth. It can carry up to 320 passengers and travel 40 km on a single charge. Built by Norinco International, the SRT marks a major shift toward sustainable urban transport. The Chief Minister said this project would help reduce pollution and ease traffic congestion.
Maryam Nawaz called the train a new step toward a cleaner, modern Punjab. She said it would enhance Lahore’s beauty and boost public confidence in eco-friendly transit. The SRT offers daily comfort and convenience for commuters while also helping the environment.
She also shared exciting news for Gujranwala and Faisalabad, saying that similar SRT systems would soon launch there. “Good news now awaits the people of Punjab every day,” she said, as the province moves toward innovation and smart development.
