Flood camp parents name newborns after PML-N leaders

Published on: September 23, 2025 3:48 PM

In a touching gesture during difficult times, two families in Punjab flood relief camps named their newborn children after prominent political figures. A baby boy, born in a flood relief camp, was named Nawaz Sharif after the three-time former Prime Minister of Pakistan. Similarly, in another relief camp overseen by the Chief Minister, a baby girl was named Maryam Nawaz, honoring Punjab’s current Chief Minister. These names reflect admiration for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership during an ongoing humanitarian crisis.

The emotional moment unfolded as families sought shelter in government-established relief camps following devastating floods across Punjab. Local health workers reported that both mothers delivered safely under medical supervision provided by the relief teams. These births offered a rare moment of joy amid widespread hardship, lifting the spirits of fellow camp residents. Community members expressed that naming the children after political leaders symbolizes gratitude toward those spearheading rescue and rehabilitation efforts.

Moreover, the gesture has sparked conversations on social media, where many users praised the parents’ choice as a sign of trust in the provincial government’s response. Supporters of PML-N highlighted that such symbolic acts demonstrate the party’s enduring influence and connection with ordinary citizens. However, some commentators also viewed the decision as a reflection of Pakistan’s deep-rooted political culture, where loyalty to parties often transcends personal circumstances. The discussion underscores how politics and everyday life often intersect in times of crisis.

Meanwhile, government officials have increased aid efforts to assist thousands displaced by the floods. Relief camps continue to provide food, shelter, and healthcare to affected families, with many volunteers working alongside provincial authorities to ensure safety and support. Officials stated that the naming of these babies serves as a reminder of the resilience of communities who, despite facing adversity, find ways to express hope and solidarity.

Furthermore, the incident highlights the emotional and cultural significance of naming practices in Pakistan. Choosing names tied to influential leaders often reflects admiration, aspirations, and a desire for blessings associated with those figures. As Punjab continues to recover from flood damage, these newborns—Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz—stand as living symbols of optimism, gratitude, and unity during challenging times. Their stories have inspired many and brought smiles to faces amid ongoing struggles.
