Zardari’s China visit sparks new era in bilateral ties

Published on: September 25, 2025 6:02 PM

President Asif Ali Zardari’s recent visit to China has added a strong new chapter to Pakistan-China relations. Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong praised the visit as a powerful step toward deepening mutual cooperation. He said it demonstrated the shared commitment to building a closer community with a shared future. The visit lasted from September 12 to 21 and included stops in Sichuan, Shanghai, and Xinjiang. Zardari’s engagements ranged from high-level meetings to cultural exchanges and business deals. It was his second visit to China in 2025, highlighting his strong personal ties with the country.

Zardari attended the 2025 Golden Panda International Cultural Forum in Chengdu, where he delivered a keynote speech. He praised the forum’s role in bridging cultural divides through art. Ambassador Jiang called the address a strong endorsement of China’s Global Civilization Initiative. Zardari also participated in events celebrating Pakistani culture in China and vice versa. From films and mangoes to panda encounters, people-to-people exchanges were at the heart of the trip. The ambassador emphasized that both countries are working together to connect Islamic and Chinese civilizations through shared cultural values.

During his visit, Zardari highlighted the need for deeper cooperation in science, technology, and innovation. He took a high-speed train in Sichuan and called it a “miracle of engineering.” Ambassador Jiang noted how past collaborations have already produced results, such as modern agriculture projects, the Orange Line in Lahore, and the launch of Pakistani satellites. Both leaders see the China-Pakistan Corridor of Innovation as a key area for future growth. China also supports Pakistan in strengthening research, technical education, and industrial capacity.

Economic cooperation was another key theme of the visit, especially in energy, finance, and infrastructure. Zardari visited the Shanghai Electric Group and oversaw new agreements to expand the Thar Coal Project. Ambassador Jiang noted the project’s impact on energy security and women’s employment in Pakistan. Chinese institutions like the Shanghai Stock Exchange have invested in Pakistan’s financial sector. Sister cities Karachi and Shanghai continue to deepen cooperation in trade, governance, and business.

In Xinjiang, Zardari observed how smart systems and digital tools are improving lives. He called the region’s development “inspiring” and encouraged more Pakistanis to visit. Ambassador Jiang concluded that the historic friendship between Pakistan and China is a unique strength. He said Zardari’s journey from Chengdu to Urumqi shows how both countries are committed to long-term, meaningful cooperation. As both nations pursue modernization, their partnership continues to evolve—stronger, deeper, and more people-focused than ever.
