Experts Condemn Afghan Cross-Border Firing as Violation of UN Charter

ISLAMABAD — The recent unprovoked cross-border firing by Afghan forces on Pakistani checkposts in Bajaur, Kurram, Upper Dir, Chitral, Baramcha, and Angoor Adda has drawn sharp condemnation from defence and foreign policy experts, who called it a violation of the UN Charter and the Doha Peace Agreement.

Security sources confirmed that Pakistani forces responded effectively, repelling the attacks and inflicting heavy losses on the Afghan side.

Retired Brigadier Mahmood Shah, a senior defence analyst, said the attacks prove that the Taliban government is failing to fulfil its Doha commitments, under which it pledged not to allow Afghan soil to be used for attacks against Pakistan.

He warned that Pakistan may have to take “defensive and offensive measures” to counter threats emanating from Afghanistan.

Earlier, DG ISPR Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry had issued a stern warning to supporters of banned groups like Fitna al-Khawarij and TTP, urging them to surrender or face military action.

Experts also raised concerns over a joint communiqué issued by India and Afghanistan, describing it as a strategic attempt by India to deepen divisions between Islamabad and Kabul.

Professor Ejaz Khan from the University of Peshawar said Pakistan has shown restraint despite repeated provocations and cross-border attacks. He accused India of stirring tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, especially after setbacks in regional confrontations.

Meanwhile, Dr AH Hilali, another Peshawar-based academic, blamed the post-US withdrawal instability for the situation, noting that billions of dollars in American weapons left in Afghanistan are now being used by militants.

He reminded that Pakistan has long supported Afghanistan — from hosting over four million refugees to providing trade and humanitarian aid — and urged the Taliban to respect that goodwill.

Experts concluded that Afghanistan’s continued aggression and support for militant infiltration could endanger regional peace, urging the international community to enforce the Doha Accord and uphold the UN Charter to prevent further escalation.
