ISLAMABAD – Recent floods have caused an estimated Rs822 billion loss to Pakistan’s economy, affecting 6.5 million people across 70 districts, according to an official report released on Friday.
The floods damaged 229,763 houses, including 59,258 fully destroyed and 170,505 partially damaged. Punjab was the hardest hit, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Sindh, and Balochistan.

A total of 1,037 people died and 1,067 were injured in flood-related incidents. The government has allocated over Rs2 billion to compensate the families of the deceased, providing Rs2 million per person.

The floods also caused the loss of 22,841 livestock and heavily affected agricultural land and rural livelihoods. Authorities carried out 5,769 rescue operations, saving over 3 million people nationwide.

Most rescues were in Punjab (2.8 million), followed by Sindh, KP, Gilgit-Baltistan, AJK, Islamabad, and Baluchistan. 20,663 tons of relief goods were distributed, with support from China, Bahrain, and the US.
Earlier estimates by the Planning Commission put total losses at Rs744 billion, while the IMF projected Rs585 billion. The latest assessment presented to the National Assembly’s Economic Affairs Committee shows losses have now reached Rs822 billion. A final report will be submitted to the Prime Minister later this week for verification by development partners.
