Punjab Prisons Overcrowded Beyond Limit, Says Hamid Mir

Breathing space has run out in Punjab’s jails, as the province has broken all previous records of overcrowding.

According to senior journalist Hamid Mir’s post on X (formerly Twitter), Punjab has 45 prisons with a total capacity of 38,000 inmates — but the number of prisoners has now exceeded 70,000.

In Adiala Jail alone, there is space for just 2,000 inmates, yet the prison currently holds more than 8,000 people.

Hamid Mir’s post highlights the alarming condition of Pakistan’s prison system, raising concerns about human rights, health, and safety inside overcrowded jails.
