Torkham border set to reopen after 10-day standoff

Published on: October 21, 2025 8:20 PM

The Torkham and Chaman border crossings between Pakistan and Afghanistan have remained shut for the past 10 days. The closure has stopped all trade and pedestrian movement. As a result, long lines of trucks are now stuck on both sides. Traders report heavy financial losses each day. However, there is growing hope that the Torkham border may reopen within 24 to 48 hours.

Officials from both countries have agreed in principle to reopen the crossing. Afghan authorities have already deployed customs staff at the border. Pakistan is also making preparations, including the setup of new import-export scanners. These steps suggest that both sides want to restore normal trade quickly. The atmosphere has shifted toward cooperation after days of tension.

A high-level Pakistani delegation is expected to visit Afghanistan today. This visit, though pre-planned, could help ease the border standoff. The team will discuss border control and other shared concerns. Diplomatic efforts are now playing a key role in resolving the crisis. Officials hope the talks will speed up the reopening process.

Meanwhile, the situation has deeply affected local businesses and daily life. Traders say they are losing millions of rupees due to the halt in trade. The Chaman-Quetta passenger train service also remains suspended. Only one border gate remains open to allow Afghan refugees to return home. Security forces are monitoring all movement closely.

Despite the ongoing challenges, signs of progress offer a ray of hope. Talks are moving in the right direction. Both countries appear willing to settle their differences peacefully. If things continue to improve, the border could reopen very soon. This would bring much-needed relief to traders, travelers, and border communities.
