Gujranwala declared most polluted city in Pakistan

Published on: November 2, 2025 4:00 PM

Smog crisis worsens in Gujranwala and Lahore; Karachi faces record AQI
GUJRANWALA – Gujranwala has topped Pakistan’s pollution rankings, with Lahore and Karachi following closely behind, according to the latest air quality readings released on Sunday.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Gujranwala soared to 379, indicating hazardous smog levels that have made breathing difficult for residents. The city’s industrial zones, including Khyali, Sheikhupura Road, and Wapda Town, recorded some of the highest pollution concentrations.

Lahore’s AQI stood at 339, while Karachi registered 206, ranking it the fourth most polluted city globally. Medical experts urged citizens to wear protective masks, limit outdoor exposure, and take preventive measures against respiratory and eye problems.

Pulmonologists warned that prolonged exposure to such air conditions could lead to severe respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses, cancer, and reduced life expectancy. They also highlighted that both outdoor and indoor pollution negatively impact lung function and cognitive development.

Authorities have intensified their crackdown on polluting industries, registering 22 cases and making several arrests. Environmental specialists stated that PM2.5 levels in both Gujranwala and Lahore exceed global safety limits.

Officials attributed worsening smog to temperature drops that trap pollutants near the surface and said anti-smog guns will soon be deployed in the most affected zones. Meanwhile, Islamabad is expected to see dry and cold weather with temperatures ranging between 22°C and 28°C.
