Trump offers cautious support after Mamdani wins New York mayoral race

MIAMI – US President Donald Trump on Wednesday commented on the recent mayoral election in New York City, where Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, was elected mayor. Trump said the federal government might offer “a little” assistance to Mamdani, while warning that the new mayor must maintain a respectful relationship with Washington to ensure the city’s success.

Trump described Mamdani’s victory as a shift toward leftist policies, claiming that New York had lost “sovereignty” and warning that the city could become communist. Speaking at a rally in Miami, Trump contrasted the election results with his administration’s economic record, framing the choice for Americans as between “communism and common sense” and between an “economic nightmare” and an “economic miracle.”

Mamdani’s historic win marked the first time a Muslim candidate has become mayor of the largest US city. The election also coincided with Democratic victories in other states, including governor races in Virginia and New Jersey, and a California proposition to redraw electoral districts to curb gerrymandering, signaling potential challenges for Republicans in next year’s midterms.

In response, Mamdani addressed Trump directly, urging him to “turn the volume up” and calling New Yorkers’ vote a lesson on resisting political figures who have betrayed the public. He highlighted the importance of dismantling systems that enable the accumulation of power, framing his victory as a model for challenging entrenched political influence.

Trump attributed Republican setbacks partly to the long federal government shutdown and the absence of his name on ballots. While acknowledging Democrats’ gains, he insisted that New York’s success under Mamdani should be monitored, signaling cautious engagement with the new mayor.
