Sri Lankan cricket team security tightened after Islamabad blast

Published on: November 12, 2025 9:15 PM

ISLAMABAD – Interior Minister and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi met Sri Lankan High Commissioner Rear Admiral Fred Seneviratne to review cricket team security.

The meeting came after a deadly suicide blast in Islamabad killed 12 and injured 36. Both sides confirmed that foolproof security measures have been implemented for the visiting team.

The blast occurred outside Islamabad’s G-11 district and sessions court during major international events, including the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference and the first ODI between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Authorities immediately reassured visiting delegations and the cricket team about enhanced safety protocols.

Naqvi emphasised that the Sri Lankan players are state guests and their safety is the government’s top priority. He outlined measures taken by Islamabad police and the chief commissioner, including detailed risk assessments and continuous monitoring. The PCB and local authorities coordinated security logistics for all team movements.

Rear Admiral Seneviratne expressed satisfaction with the arrangements and conveyed condolences for the blast victims. He highlighted the importance of confidence-building after the 2009 Lahore attack, when eight people were killed and several Sri Lankan players were injured. Both sides agreed to maintain high alert during the ongoing ODI series.
