PPL announces hydrocarbon discovery in Sindh’s Sawan area

Published on: November 14, 2025 3:20 PM

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) announced a major hydrocarbon discovery from its exploratory well Sawan North Deep-1 ST-1 in Khairpur, Sindh. The well produced gas at 0.30 MMSCFD and marks a significant milestone for the Sawan Joint Venture. The discovery validates new geological models and may boost future exploration in the region.

The Sawan Joint Venture includes UEP Beta as operator with 25 percent stake, PPL with 30 percent, PPL Europe E&P Limited 10 percent, Prime AEP Limited 30 percent, and Government Holdings (Private) Limited five percent. The well was spud-in on September 16, 2024, and successfully drilled to a measured depth of 14,017 feet.

PPL stated that the primary target of the well was the Lower Goru Formation (A-Interval Sands). Testing of the promising intervals confirmed gas flow under a flowing wellhead pressure of 100 psig. This result demonstrates both the area’s hydrocarbon potential and the effectiveness of the joint venture’s strategy.

Importantly, this well is the first in the Sawan area drilled using a sequence stratigraphic trap evaluation approach. PPL said this pioneering method helped identify the gas zones accurately and efficiently. The company expects this methodology to guide future drilling in the Sawan region.

The discovery is expected to attract further investment and exploration in Sindh. Authorities and the Sawan Joint Venture will continue testing and evaluating the well. Meanwhile, PPL considers this success a major step toward increasing Pakistan’s domestic energy production.
