OpenAI has launched a new group messaging feature in ChatGPT, turning it into a social platform. The feature allows multiple users to chat together. ChatGPT will act as a guide, assisting users in group conversations.
Currently, the feature is available in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan. OpenAI plans to expand it globally in the coming months. Users can include up to 20 participants in one group chat. Individual profiles, usernames, and photos identify each participant.

Group members can also send private one-on-one messages within the chat thread. Users can react to messages with emojis, mute notifications, or rename chat threads. Group admins have control over membership and can manage access efficiently.
The new feature runs on the ChatGPT 5.1 Auto AI model, ensuring fast and accurate responses. All tools, including web search, image generation, file sharing, and uploads, remain available inside group chats. OpenAI says this update will enhance collaboration for teams, friends, and families.
