AR Rahman, Arno Krimmer unite to bring Rumi’s life to film

AR Rahman, Hollywood producer Arno Krimmer announce film on Rumi

A new cinematic tribute to the legendary Sufi poet Rumi is in the works, with Academy Award-winning composer AR Rahman and Hollywood producer Arno Krimmer joining forces to bring his spiritual legacy to the big screen. The project aims to explore the mystic’s life, philosophy, and enduring influence across cultures and centuries.

Rahman, speaking about the inspiration behind the film, reflected on Rumi’s unique place in the world of poetry and spiritual thought. He described Rumi’s verses in the Masnavi as deeply “soul-satisfying,” noting that even when every idea isn’t fully understood, the emotional experience remains transformative. “When somebody is really hurt, there’s a new opening for them in life or spirituality,” he said.

The composer emphasised Rumi’s message of non-judgmentalism, one of the core themes expected to shape the film. Quoting the poet’s famous line, “Somewhere beyond right and wrong, there is a garden,” Rahman highlighted the universality of Rumi’s worldview — one that transcends labels, divisions, and belief systems. According to Rahman, it is the shared “light of God” within humanity that Rumi speaks to.

For producer Arno Krimmer, the film represents the culmination of a dream he has cherished for more than twenty years. He credited German scholar Annemarie Schimmel for introducing him to Rumi’s writings, recalling how he became “intoxicated” by the poet’s words. Krimmer said destiny played a role in bringing him together with Rahman, allowing their creative visions to align for this long-awaited project.
