Sonya Hussain wins best actor award for 'Deemak' in Moscow

MOSCOW — Pakistani actress Sonya Hussain has won the “Best Actor Award” at the Eurasian Open Award “Diamond Butterfly” ceremony held in Moscow. She received the accolade for her outstanding performance in the critically acclaimed Pakistani film Deemak.

Sharing the achievement on Instagram, Sonya wrote, “DEEMAK rises again. Honoured with Best Actor Award at the Eurasia Russian Film Festival among 35 films from across the world.” She described the moment as more than an award, calling it a proof that honesty, passion, and perseverance can make dreams come true.

Addressing young girls in Pakistan, she added, “To every young girl who wonders if her voice matters, this win is yours.” She also expressed gratitude to the Russian government, the festival jury and founder Mr. Nikita, and the Government of Pakistan for supporting the film and facilitating its participation.

Another Pakistani film, Love Guru, was also among the entries competing for top honors at the global event. Hussain, known for her versatile acting, captivated the jury with her portrayal in Deemak, which was praised for its emotional depth and her nuanced performance.

The awards highlighted the growing international recognition of South Asian cinema. According to organizers, this year’s event saw unprecedented global participation, with Pakistani films gaining visibility as a symbol of the region’s emerging talent.
