Telegram scales globally with just 30 employees

Published on: November 29, 2025 1:57 PM

Telegram is worth $30 billion with just 30 employees and no HR

Telegram, the cloud-based messaging and social media app, has demonstrated that massive global reach doesn’t require a huge workforce. Valued at $30 billion and serving over 1 billion monthly active users, Telegram operates with a remarkably lean team of just 30 employees.

Founder Pavel Durov, also known for creating the Russian social network VKontakte, has deliberately designed Telegram to avoid traditional corporate structures. The company has no HR department, no central offices, and minimal bureaucracy—choices aimed at maintaining agility and operational efficiency.

Durov’s philosophy emphasizes deep technical expertise and extreme trust in a small team. Each employee is given significant responsibility, while automation handles scaling, server maintenance, and basic user issues. This approach eliminates layers of middle management and allows decisions to be made quickly.

The remote-focused operations further reduce costs associated with offices, commuting, and internal meetings, letting Telegram dedicate nearly all resources to technical development and infrastructure. Durov’s model challenges the typical Silicon Valley growth strategy, proving that rapid expansion can coexist with minimal overhead.

Telegram supports large groups of up to 200,000 members and channels that broadcast content to unlimited audiences. Its cloud-based platform allows seamless multi-device access, while strong encryption ensures user privacy and security.

By prioritizing efficiency and automation over corporate bloat, Telegram has built one of the world’s largest messaging platforms with fewer resources than many startups. Durov’s extreme trust model and lean operational setup offer a new blueprint for scaling high-tech companies in an increasingly competitive global market.
