No big defense announcements expected during Putin’s India trip

Published on: November 29, 2025 11:30 PM

India’s defense secretary Rajesh Kumar said Russian President Vladimir Putin’s upcoming visit will likely see no major defense announcements. Talks on the S-400 missile system are not expected to progress during the visit. India will focus on addressing delivery delays and clarifying timelines for pending orders.

Kumar emphasized that India will continue to strengthen defense cooperation with Russia. The government may discuss placing additional S-400 unit orders. However, the primary focus will remain on resolving supply delays and ensuring timely delivery of ordered systems.

The defense secretary added that discussions could involve clarifying schedules for pending equipment. India aims to maintain strategic partnerships while protecting its defense readiness. Officials plan careful engagement to avoid disruptions in procurement processes.

Putin’s visit, scheduled for December 4–5, comes amid ongoing global geopolitical pressures. India continues to balance its independent foreign policy with commitments to both Western and traditional defense partners. Media reports suggest the visit will focus on strategic dialogues rather than immediate acquisitions.

Analysts say the visit reinforces India-Russia defense ties but signals limited immediate operational changes. Both countries are expected to use the visit to strengthen long-term collaboration and clarify delivery timelines for existing agreements.
