The milestone came during India’s first ODI of the ongoing three-match home series against South Africa at the JSCA International Stadium Complex. Entering the match with 349 sixes, Sharma needed just three more to overtake Afridi, who had smashed 351 maximums in his illustrious ODI career spanning 398 matches.

Sharma wasted no time in achieving the feat, hitting three sixes during his explosive half-century against the Proteas. This took his sixes tally to 352 in 269 innings, surpassing Afridi, who required 369 innings to reach his total.

Rohit also holds the record for hitting the most sixes across all formats of international cricket, with 645 maximums to his name. He comfortably leads over second-placed West Indies star Chris Gayle, who has 553 sixes. Afridi ranks third with 476, followed by New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum with 398, and England’s Jos Buttler with 387.

In ODIs alone, the list of top six-hitters now reads: Rohit Sharma (352 in 269 innings), Shahid Afridi (351 in 369 innings), Chris Gayle (331 in 294 innings), Sanath Jayasuriya (270 in 433 innings), and MS Dhoni (229 in 297 innings).
