Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Saturday criticised Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for reacting to DG ISPR Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry’s press conference. The DG had called former premier Imran Khan a security risk, narcissist, and mentally ill, without naming him directly. Asif said the military spokesman had every right to make such statements.
Speaking in Sialkot, Asif recalled that Imran had previously used harsh language against opposition leaders and even women. He said PTI had no right to object to the DG’s comments. The minister claimed the party engages in “anti-state” activities and fails to acknowledge armed forces’ sacrifices. He urged PTI to support martyrs, not terrorists, and condemned its soft stance toward militants.

Asif highlighted that PTI remained silent during the May conflict with India and did not assist the armed forces. He criticised party leaders for interacting with foreign media in ways that “engage the enemy.” The defence minister stressed that the DG’s remarks were “guarded,” while he himself could respond more forcefully if needed.
He warned PTI to continue political protests but not threaten Pakistan’s sovereignty or insult the military. Asif said the party’s sole ideology is to gain power, showing alleged lack of allegiance to the country. He emphasised that national interest must take priority over political theatrics and personal agendas.

In response, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali expressed disappointment but reaffirmed the party’s commitment to Pakistan. He said the country and army belong to everyone and urged dialogue with incarcerated leaders Imran and Bushra Bibi to reduce tensions. Gohar warned that unnecessary conflicts with institutions could worsen the situation.
