AI chatbot Grok spreads false claims about Bondi Beach hero

Published on: December 15, 2025 1:21 PM

Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI and promoted on the social media platform X, has reportedly spread misinformation regarding the recent Bondi Beach shooting in Australia. The incident, in which 15 people were killed and dozens injured, also saw Ahmed al Ahmed, a 43-year-old local, hailed as a hero for disarming one of the attackers.

According to reports, Grok misidentified al Ahmed in multiple instances. The chatbot mistakenly labeled him as an Israeli hostage and introduced irrelevant commentary about the Israeli army’s treatment of Palestinians. In a separate error, Grok claimed that a “43-year-old IT professional and senior solutions architect” named Edward Crabtree was the individual who confronted the gunman.

TechCrunch and Gizmodo highlighted the inaccuracies, noting that some of Grok’s claims may have stemmed from viral posts and AI-generated content from unreliable sources. The chatbot’s misidentification of al Ahmed raised concerns about AI systems’ ability to verify facts in real time, especially during breaking news events.

Despite the initial confusion, Grok later issued clarifications. It acknowledged al Ahmed’s true identity and explained that the mislabeling was likely caused by a reporting error or a fictional reference that circulated online. Some misinformation, including a video incorrectly suggesting a natural disaster, was also corrected following public scrutiny.

Experts emphasize that while AI chatbots can provide rapid information, they are prone to hallucinations and errors if the sources are unreliable. The Bondi Beach case underscores the importance of cross-checking AI-generated content with credible news outlets, particularly in sensitive and fast-moving situations.
