Tarar condemns misinformation linking Pakistan to Sydney attack

Published on: December 18, 2025 11:49 AM

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar strongly criticised the spread of misinformation, particularly claims falsely linking Pakistan to the recent Sydney attack. He spoke at the closing ceremony of the National Cyber Security event in Islamabad, emphasising the need for verified information and responsible online behaviour.

Tarar described misinformation as one of the biggest challenges in the digital age. He condemned attempts to associate Pakistan with the Sydney incident without evidence or credible sources, warning that such narratives undermine truth and public trust.

The minister highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen cyber security in the country. He said operational cyber security centres are actively countering threats and that the government is enhancing the National Cyber Security Policy to improve data protection mechanisms.

I commend Information Minister @TararAttaullah for a clear and forceful press briefing that exposed the irresponsible and premature reporting by sections of the Indian media following the Sydney attack.

Emphasising the importance of public awareness, Tarar announced a nationwide cyber security campaign to educate citizens about digital safety and responsible online conduct. He stressed that awareness and training are critical to preventing cyber threats and data breaches.

The minister also referred to recent operations against cybercrime, which identified several fake social media accounts spreading false content. He reminded attendees that Pakistan has been a major victim of terrorism and has made significant sacrifices in combating extremism.

Tarar warned that artificial intelligence and digital tools are increasingly misused to spread fake news, manipulate content, and falsely implicate individuals or nations. He urged responsible use of social media and highlighted the key role of journalists in countering disinformation.

To further combat digital misinformation, the minister announced plans for specialised workshops and training programmes for media professionals.
