NEW DELHI: Bangladesh rejected India’s description of a protest outside its high commission in New Delhi as “misleading propaganda”, calling the incident “highly regrettable” and unacceptable. Around 20-25 protesters had gathered on Saturday evening, raising anti-Bangladesh slogans and issuing threats against the Bangladesh high commissioner, according to mission officials.

India’s External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had said the protest was a response to the killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a garment factory worker in Mymensingh, Bangladesh. Jaiswal noted that the protesters were quickly dispersed by police and that there was no breach of security. He added that India remained committed to the safety of foreign missions under the Vienna Convention.

Das was beaten to death on December 18 over allegations of blasphemy, and his body was reportedly set on fire. Ten people were arrested in connection with the killing. The protesters outside the high commission called for the protection of minorities in Bangladesh.
In response, the Bangladeshi foreign ministry said the protesters were allowed to act freely outside the high commission, creating panic among personnel. Bangladesh rejected India’s framing of the incident as merely highlighting attacks on minorities and said it was “an unjustifiable event” that should not be dismissed as propaganda.
The ministry acknowledged India’s commitment to the safety of Bangladeshi diplomatic posts, but emphasised that the intercommunal situation in Bangladesh is stable and under control. It also stressed that governments in the region share a responsibility to protect minority communities in their respective countries.
