John Cusack has offered a rare behind-the-scenes insight into one of Hollywood’s most unforgettable romantic moments — the boombox scene from the 1989 classic Say Anything.
More than three decades after the film’s release, the 59-year-old actor revealed that he initially struggled with how to perform the scene that would ultimately define his character, Lloyd Dobler. Directed by Cameron Crowe, Say Anything features Lloyd standing outside Diane Court’s bedroom window, holding a boombox over his head as Peter Gabriel’s In Your Eyes plays — a gesture that has since become a cultural touchstone for cinematic romance.

Speaking during a special screening at New York City’s Kings Theatre on November 30, Cusack admitted he was unsure how to approach the moment. He feared the scene could make Lloyd appear weak or desperate rather than sincere and confident.
“I didn’t know how to do it because I thought the character was, you know, he’s sitting outside whining, kind of saying, ‘Please come back to me,’” Cusack told the audience. “Guys have pride, right?”
The actor explained that his breakthrough came when he reconsidered Lloyd’s motivation. Rather than portraying him as pleading or submissive, Cusack chose to lean into a more defiant and self-assured interpretation.
“He knew something fishy was up, maybe with the father, or that somebody was in her head,” Cusack said, referring to the film’s storyline involving Diane’s controlling father. “So I thought, I don’t really know how to do it. And then finally at the end of the movie, I thought, ‘Oh, what if he’s really mad? And he’s more defiant.’ And that was what made it work.”

That creative shift helped transform the scene into a powerful declaration of belief and resolve, rather than simple romantic desperation. Today, the boombox moment remains one of the most referenced and celebrated scenes in romantic film history, cementing Lloyd Dobler’s place as an enduring pop culture icon.
