George Clooney becomes French citizen with family

Published on: December 30, 2025 12:23 PM

Hollywood star George Clooney has become a French citizen along with his wife Amal Alamuddin Clooney and their two children, according to an official decree. The confirmation was published in France’s government gazette on Monday.

The move follows comments Clooney made earlier this month praising France’s strong privacy laws. He said the country offered greater protection for families, particularly children, from intrusive media attention.

Speaking to RTL radio, Clooney said he admired French culture and language, even joking about his struggles with learning French despite taking lessons. He highlighted the absence of paparazzi at school gates as a key reason behind the family’s decision.

AU REVOIR: George Clooney, his wife Amal, and their twin children have officially become French citizens. The actor said the family relocated to France to escape Hollywood culture and raise their children with more privacy and normalcy.

Clooney, now a dual US-French citizen, has long-standing ties to Europe that predate his 2014 marriage to Amal Clooney. Amal, a British-Lebanese human rights lawyer, speaks fluent French and has frequently worked on international legal issues.

The couple owns several properties across Europe and the United States. Clooney purchased an estate on Italy’s Lake Como in 2002, while the couple later acquired a historic manor in England.

Their French residence, a former wine estate known as Domaine du Canadel near Brignoles in southern France, was bought in 2021. Clooney has described the property as the place where the family feels happiest.

In addition to their European homes, the Clooneys own a New York apartment and a property in Kentucky. Reports suggest they sold residences in Los Angeles and Mexico over the past decade.

The couple are parents to eight-year-old twins and are known for keeping their family life largely private. Clooney has credited France’s legal protections for allowing them to do so.

Beyond his personal life, Clooney remains a prominent figure in the film industry. He has won two Oscars and earned significant income from endorsements and business ventures, including a successful tequila brand sale.
