China slams U.S. over Maduro arrest

Published on: January 6, 2026 5:41 PM

The United States seized Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and transferred him to New York for trial. China strongly condemned the move and accused Washington of acting as a global judge. The arrest sparked international shock and urgent debate at the United Nations.

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi rejected unilateral military actions and stressed respect for national sovereignty. He said no country has the right to police or judge the world. His remarks came after images showed Maduro blindfolded and handcuffed during his capture.

Meanwhile, Maduro pleaded not guilty to U.S. narcotics charges in a New York court. Soon after, the UN Security Council convened at Colombia’s request, supported by China and Russia. China warned the move could set a dangerous international precedent.

Chinese officials said military force never solves political problems and only deepens crises. Analysts noted China has limited material support to offer Venezuela. However, Beijing can still shape global opinion through diplomacy and UN engagement.

Finally, the incident tests China’s Global Security Initiative and influence in Latin America. Beijing has built strong regional ties through trade and diplomacy over decades. Still, Maduro’s capture dealt a serious blow to China’s image as a dependable partner.
