PTI seeks release of political prisoners, ECP restructuring

Published on: January 13, 2026 9:55 AM

ISLAMABAD — The Parliamentary Party of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) on Monday urged the government to withdraw cases against its founding chairman Imran Khan and carry out a reconstitution of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), saying the country was passing through a “sensitive phase.”

The meeting, held at Parliament House under Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, passed a unanimous resolution calling for the immediate release of political prisoners and the restoration of family visits for the former prime minister. The party argued that democratic norms required transparency, rule of law and equal political participation.

The resolution also suggested that democratic forces should work toward a new Charter of Democracy aimed at ensuring free, fair and transparent elections so citizens could elect their representatives without interference. It further demanded that the Peace Jirga declaration be implemented to support durable peace in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Participants expressed concern over what they described as police “brutality” against activists of the Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan in Punjab and challenges reportedly faced by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister during his visit to Sindh. The group said such actions undermined political freedoms and obstructed inter-provincial understanding.

In addition, the parliamentary party paid tribute to Opposition Leader Omar Ayub Khan and members who were de-seated from their positions, stating that their efforts were a continuation of the broader struggle for democratic rights. The group also commended supporters in Lahore and Karachi for sustained political mobilisation.

Political analysts say the statement reflects PTI’s continued focus on institutional reforms and relief for detained leaders at a time when the opposition is seeking leverage in the ongoing political and legislative landscape.
