Karachi gas shortage forces possible industrial supply suspension

Published on: January 14, 2026 3:23 PM

The Sui Southern Gas Company is considering suspending gas supply to industries on Saturday as authorities try to ease pressure on domestic consumers affected by persistent shortages. Officials say the decision remains under review and depends on demand trends, yet it reflects growing urgency to stabilize supply during peak winter usage across Karachi.

Meanwhile, the gas supply situation in Karachi has shown signs of improvement after the restoration of nearly 25 to 30 million cubic feet per day from several natural gas wells. As a result, officials believe targeted management steps could further improve pressure levels, especially during morning and evening cooking hours.

However, residents across many neighborhoods continue to face irregular gas availability, which has disrupted daily routines and increased reliance on alternative fuels during recent cold spells. Consequently, authorities are prioritizing household needs, arguing that temporary industrial curbs may provide broader relief to a larger population.

Gas shortages during winter have become a recurring issue, largely driven by rising domestic demand for heating, cooking, and water warming purposes. Moreover, limited production growth and infrastructure constraints have added pressure, making seasonal shortfalls a familiar challenge rather than an unexpected disruption.

At the policy level, the federal government earlier decided not to increase gas tariffs for the next six months, aiming to protect consumers from added financial strain. Nevertheless, the regulator recently raised LPG prices by Rs10.68 per kilogram, pushing the rate to Rs219.67 and affecting households using alternate fuels.
