India urges citizens to exit Iran immediately

Published on: January 15, 2026 5:15 PM

India has advised all its citizens to leave Iran amid reports of a deadly crackdown on protests. The Indian Embassy in Tehran issued the alert for students, pilgrims, tourists, and business travelers. Authorities urged nationals to depart by any available transport.

Rights groups report that thousands of people in Iran have been killed or arrested in mass protests. The unrest has intensified, prompting foreign governments, including India, to issue travel warnings.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs estimates that about 10,000 Indian citizens are usually present in Iran. Many are students studying at Iranian universities, while others are pilgrims visiting holy sites.

The advisory emphasized that citizens should act immediately to ensure their safety. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with the embassy to assist nationals still in the country.
