Blast rocks Kabul’s Shahr-e Naw, several dead

Published on: January 19, 2026 6:30 PM

A powerful explosion struck the Shahr-e Naw area of Kabul on Monday, killing and injuring multiple people. Initial reports confirm casualties, but the exact numbers are not yet clear. The blast caused panic in one of Kabul’s usually secure districts and damaged nearby buildings and vehicles.

The Taliban Interior Ministry spokesperson, Abdul Mateen Qani, confirmed that lives were lost and said investigations are ongoing. He added that security forces and emergency responders are examining the site to determine the cause and prevent further incidents.

Shahr-e Naw is known for housing many foreign nationals, embassies, and high-profile offices, making it one of Kabul’s typically safest neighborhoods. The attack has raised concerns about the growing threat to civilians and foreigners despite existing security measures.

Emergency responders reached the site quickly, and injured victims were transported to nearby hospitals. Roads around the blast site were temporarily closed, and authorities have urged residents to remain indoors while the investigation continues.

Officials promised further updates once investigations are complete. The incident underscores persistent security challenges in Kabul and the ongoing risk of attacks even in relatively secure districts.
