China demands action after deadly Kabul blast

Published on: January 20, 2026 5:15 PM

China has called on Afghan authorities to investigate a deadly blast in Kabul that killed a Chinese national and six Afghans, while injuring several others. Five Chinese citizens were also wounded, prompting Beijing to seek urgent medical assistance for the injured. The explosion occurred in the commercial Shahr-e-Naw area, a district housing embassies, offices, and shopping complexes.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said China has asked Afghan authorities to ensure proper treatment for the wounded and take all necessary measures to prevent further attacks. Chinese officials also urged their nationals to avoid travel to Afghanistan and leave dangerous areas immediately due to ongoing security risks.

Beijing emphasized the need for stronger protection of Chinese citizens, investments, and ongoing projects in Afghanistan. Officials demanded effective security measures and called for accountability for those responsible. The Chinese Embassy confirmed that it remains in close contact with Afghan authorities as the situation develops.

The militant Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing, stating that Chinese citizens had been targeted due to alleged actions by China against Uyghurs. The blast took place near the restaurant’s kitchen, which was jointly run by Chinese and Afghan partners serving the Chinese Muslim community.
