EU warns US tensions risk global rivals

Published on: January 21, 2026 6:00 PM

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned that rising tensions with the United States could strengthen Western adversaries. She spoke on Wednesday amid disputes over Greenland and trade threats. Her remarks came during a speech to European lawmakers in Strasbourg.

Von der Leyen cautioned that conflict between close allies would weaken collective security. She said such divisions would only benefit rivals seeking greater global influence. Therefore, she urged restraint and cooperation between Europe and Washington.

She also criticized US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on European allies. Von der Leyen described the approach as wrong and counterproductive. She stressed that trade disputes should not undermine long-standing partnerships.

Meanwhile, the EU chief emphasized that Europe favors dialogue and diplomatic solutions. She said the bloc remains committed to resolving disagreements through discussion. However, she added that Europe will not hesitate to defend its interests if required.
