TikTok users in US report sign-in, performance issues amid app disruption

Published on: January 26, 2026 2:10 PM

WASHINGTON: TikTok experienced widespread technical issues in the United States on Sunday, with users reporting sign-in problems, feed glitches, and performance lags. The disruptions come days after TikTok averted a potential ban in the country through a landmark deal that shifted majority ownership to American investors.

According to Downdetector, complaints about the platform peaked around 4:00 a.m., with over 36,000 users reporting issues. By mid-afternoon, the number of reports had dropped to roughly 4,689, though some users continued to experience problems.

Most complaints—65 percent—related to app functionality, including difficulty signing into accounts. Around 22 percent of users reported complete outages, while 23 percent flagged problems with personalized content feeds. Many users also expressed frustration over repetitive content and the inability to repost videos.

The outage coincides with a significant change in TikTok’s US operations. On January 22, ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, finalized a deal that converted the platform into a majority American-owned joint venture, resolving ongoing regulatory concerns about data security and foreign ownership.

The company has not yet released an official statement on the cause of the disruption. However, users took to social media to vent their frustrations, with hashtags highlighting the app’s downtime trending briefly on X (formerly Twitter).

Analysts suggest that such technical disruptions could impact user engagement, particularly as TikTok works to solidify its new corporate structure in the United States. Despite the temporary issues, experts say the platform remains one of the most widely used social media apps in the country, with millions of daily active users.

As the situation evolves, TikTok users are closely monitoring updates to restore normal functionality, hoping the platform stabilizes quickly after this widespread outage.
