Maryam Nawaz cancels Basant amid Islamabad tragedy

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz canceled all her Basant-related engagements following the deadly Islamabad suicide attack. The mega Basant show at Liberty Square was also called off. She emphasized national unity against extremists and their facilitators.

The announcement came a day after the Tarlai Imambargah blast killed 31 worshippers and injured 169 during Friday prayers. Emergency teams and hospitals in Islamabad and Rawalpindi rushed to assist the victims immediately. Security forces cordoned off the area to secure the site and investigate.

Maryam Nawaz stated that the cancellations were necessary to respect the victims and maintain national solidarity. Authorities praised the swift response of rescue teams, paramedics, and hospital staff who treated the injured effectively. Families of victims received support and counseling amid widespread grief.

In the wake of the Islamabad tragedy, I am cancelling all my Basant-related activities that were scheduled for tomorrow. The mega Basant show at the Liberty Square also stands cancelled.

The Chief Minister also urged the public to remain vigilant against threats from militant groups. She emphasized cooperation between citizens and law enforcement to prevent further attacks. Police and intelligence agencies continue investigations to identify and arrest the perpetrators.

Officials confirmed that Basant festivities nationwide have been reviewed, and similar precautionary measures may follow. Maryam Nawaz highlighted that the government prioritizes public safety over celebrations. The nation mourns the victims while preparing to counter extremist threats decisively.
