Punjab, World Bank agree to expand development partnership

LAHORE – The Punjab government and the World Bank have agreed to deepen collaboration across key development sectors, with a focus on health, education, housing, tourism, and climate-related initiatives.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif met World Bank President Ajay Banga and his delegation, warmly welcoming the visiting team. During the discussions, both sides reviewed ongoing projects and explored ways to further strengthen cooperation under the Country Partnership Framework (CPF).

Ajay Banga praised Punjab’s welfare-focused initiatives and ongoing reforms, highlighting the province’s progress in education, health, tourism, and skills development. He assured continued support and investment in climate resilience, digital governance, and inclusive development projects.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized that health and education remain top priorities for the provincial government, with substantial investments already underway. She noted that digital governance, e-procurement, agriculture reforms, and IT initiatives, including the Nawaz Sharif IT City and global IT certifications, are enhancing efficiency and transparency.

The meeting also highlighted housing schemes such as “Apni Chhat Apna Ghar” and social welfare programs like the Nigehban Package and Himmat Card, aimed at supporting vulnerable citizens.

The World Bank president underlined the need for Pakistan to create 30 million jobs over the next decade, stressing that partnerships with provincial governments are crucial for sustainable economic growth. Both sides agreed to continue joint efforts to enhance development outcomes and improve the quality of life for Punjab’s citizens.

The meeting reflects a growing commitment to leveraging international partnerships to accelerate reforms and ensure inclusive, sustainable growth across the province.
