Italy suffered a heavy 73-run defeat in their T20 World Cup debut against Scotland on Monday in Kolkata. Scotland posted 207-4, led by opener George Munsey’s 84, and bowled Italy out for 134 in 16.4 overs. Off-spinner Michael Leask took 4-17 and also contributed 22 unbeaten runs with the bat.
Italy, the lowest-ranked side in the 20-team tournament, showed fight through a fourth-wicket partnership of 73 between brothers Ben and Harry Manenti. Harry scored 37 and Ben made 52, but the Italian batting collapsed afterward. Vice-captain Harry Manenti described batting with his brother at a World Cup as “special” despite the loss.

Scotland captain Richie Berrington said the win was vital after losing their opening match to the West Indies. Opener George Munsey and Michael Jones shared a 126-run opening stand that set the platform for Scotland’s big total. Brandon McMullen scored 41 not out off 18 balls, while Leask’s late hitting helped push the team to their highest T20 World Cup total.
Italy’s campaign suffered another setback when captain Wayne Madsen dislocated his shoulder while fielding and is doubtful for the rest of the tournament. Despite the injury, Madsen has an unusual World Cup double, having also played field hockey for South Africa. Coach John Davison confirmed scans would determine his return, but the loss is a big blow for Italy’s debut campaign.

The result marks Scotland’s first win of the tournament and a historic start for them after replacing Bangladesh just two weeks before the World Cup. Munsey narrowly missed a century, hitting 13 fours and 2 sixes in 54 balls. Scotland will look to build on this momentum as Italy regroup for their remaining matches.
