ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday granted permission for Barrister Salman Safdar to meet Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, who is currently incarcerated at Adiala Jail. The decision was made during a hearing conducted by a two-member bench comprising Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan.

As proceedings began, the Chief Justice prevented Latif Khosa from addressing the court. Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan informed the bench that a written reply had already been submitted in chambers in accordance with the court’s order dated 24 August 2023. The reply included medical reports covering the period from 5 to 18 August, as Imran Khan was lodged in Attock Jail at the time.

The Chief Justice noted that there was no subsequent order on record indicating the Supreme Court’s satisfaction following the 24 August directive. He announced the appointment of Salman Safdar as a “friend of the court,” expressing full confidence in him to carry out the task responsibly.

The Supreme Court instructed Salman Safdar to visit Adiala Jail and submit a written report detailing Imran Khan’s living conditions and the facilities available to him. The Chief Justice stressed that Safdar should be given respectful and unhindered access to the PTI founder and should not be made to wait outside the jail.

Additionally, the Chief Justice assured that a personal staff officer would be available to address any issues that might arise during the visit. The court’s order underscores its commitment to ensuring transparency regarding the welfare and treatment of incarcerated political figures.

This development comes amid ongoing legal proceedings involving the PTI founder, with multiple reports and petitions submitted to the Supreme Court regarding his detention and prison conditions. By appointing a neutral observer, the court aims to maintain accountability and oversight of the prison system while safeguarding the rights of high-profile detainees.
