
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has extended warm congratulations to Tarique Rahman following his party’s sweeping victory in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections.
On behalf of the people and government of Pakistan, the prime minister also felicitated the citizens of Bangladesh for the peaceful and successful conduct of the polls. He expressed Islamabad’s desire to work closely with the incoming leadership to further strengthen bilateral cooperation.

According to unofficial results, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) alliance has secured a commanding majority, winning 212 out of 300 seats in parliament. The Jamaat-e-Islami alliance captured 70 seats, while the National Citizen Party managed to secure five seats so far.
Vote counting remains underway, with turnout reported at over 60 percent, significantly higher than in the previous election. Alongside the parliamentary vote, a national referendum on constitutional reforms drew substantial public participation, with around 67 percent of voters backing proposed changes reflecting demands championed by younger generations.

The proposed reforms include term limits for prime ministers, enhanced judicial independence, greater women’s representation and provisions for neutral interim governments during election periods.
Meanwhile, the Jamaat-e-Islami alliance has accepted the outcome of the election and emphasised the need to move forward in a positive and constructive manner, signalling prospects for political stability in the country after months of turbulence.
