Pakistan’s world cup hopes on edge after crushing India loss

Published on: February 16, 2026 4:44 PM

Pakistan now find themselves in a do-or-die situation at the ICC T20 World Cup after suffering a heavy 61-run defeat against India, which has put their qualification hopes under serious threat. As a result, the pressure has intensified, and every remaining match has turned into a virtual knockout for Pakistan in the group stage.

Following this setback, Pakistan’s net run rate dropped sharply from a healthy 0.932 to minus 0.403, pushing them below the United States in the Group A standings. Meanwhile, the USA currently hold four points from four matches with a strong net run rate of 0.788, which has further complicated Pakistan’s path to the Super Eight.

Now, Pakistan must win their final group match against Namibia on February 18 to stay alive in the tournament, making this encounter extremely critical for the team. However, even a narrow victory may not be enough, as Pakistan also need to improve their net run rate to strengthen their qualification chances.

Earlier in the match, Pakistan won the toss and decided to bowl first, but India posted a challenging total of 176 runs on the board. Ishan Kishan led the charge with an impressive 74, while Suryakumar Yadav added valuable support with a quick 32 to maintain strong momentum.

In response, Pakistan struggled with the bat and were bowled out for just 114 runs in the 18th over, failing to build any meaningful partnerships. Consequently, the comprehensive defeat has raised serious questions about Pakistan’s consistency and mental strength at a crucial stage of the tournament.
