India tells citizens to leave Iran amid tensions

Published on: February 23, 2026 11:30 PM

India has advised its citizens in Iran to leave the country as regional tensions soar amid fears of a possible US military strike on Tehran, government officials announced on Monday. The advisory signals growing concern for the safety of Indian students, tourists and businesspeople amid escalating security risks.

The Indian Embassy in Tehran said in an official advisory that all Indian nationals and Persons of Indian Origin currently in Iran should depart by all available means of transport, including commercial flights. It also reiterated earlier guidance urging citizens to exercise caution and avoid areas of protests or demonstrations.

Officials estimate that around 10,000 Indians are usually present across Iran, including students, businesspersons and pilgrims. The embassy urged travellers to keep their travel and identification documents readily available and remain in close contact with mission personnel if they need assistance. Emergency helpline numbers were also provided for those needing support during departure.

The warning comes amid heightened regional unease over the standoff between Washington and Tehran, with fears a US strike may be imminent as diplomatic negotiations continue. South Korea has issued a similar advisory to its citizens in Iran, citing rapidly escalating tensions and potential security deteriorations.

India’s foreign ministry also underscored that citizens should monitor local media for developments and stay in touch with the embassy for updates, highlighting the volatile environment in the region. The advisory reflects broader international concerns over safety as geopolitical tensions intensify.
