Global ministers condemn Israel over West Bank land moves

Published on: February 24, 2026 4:20 PM

Foreign ministers from Brazil, France, Spain, Turkey, and several other nations strongly condemned Israel’s recent decisions in the West Bank, describing them as sweeping measures extending unlawful control over Palestinian territories. The joint statement, issued by the Turkish Foreign Ministry, highlighted that Israel’s actions reclassify Palestinian land as so-called “state land” and accelerate illegal settlement expansion, raising serious concerns over regional stability and peace prospects.

The statement was signed by officials from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, as well as the heads of the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. They stressed that the Israeli measures undermine ongoing peace efforts, jeopardise Palestinian self-rule, and further entrench Israeli administrative control over occupied areas. The ministers described the developments as a “flagrant violation of international law” and a step toward de facto annexation.

Israel’s cabinet on February 15 approved steps to tighten control over the West Bank, making it easier for settlers to purchase land, a move Palestinians have termed a de-facto annexation. The West Bank, largely under Israeli military control, is part of the territory Palestinians seek for a future independent state. Limited Palestinian governance exists in certain areas under the Western-backed Palestinian Authority.

The joint condemnation stressed that settlement expansion and related administrative decisions threaten regional integration and destabilise any prospects for meaningful negotiation. The ministers highlighted that accelerating settlement activity diminishes confidence in peace talks and compromises the legal and historical status of Palestinian territories under international law.

Analysts note that the international response signals growing diplomatic pressure on Israel, as countries warn against further unilateral actions. The statement underscores the importance of respecting international norms and the urgency of resuming negotiations to achieve a two-state solution that guarantees sovereignty and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.

The ministers urged Israel to halt settlement expansion, reaffirm commitment to international law, and engage constructively in peace initiatives. Continued global scrutiny and diplomatic engagement aim to prevent further entrenchment of Israeli control while supporting Palestinian rights and regional stability.
