Deadly shootout between Cuban forces and US registered speedboat raises tensions

Published on: February 26, 2026 6:29 AM

Cuban border forces shot dead four people after a Florida registered speedboat entered Cuban territorial waters and became involved in an armed confrontation near Falcones Cay, according to Cuban authorities. The incident, which also left six people injured, has sparked concern and prompted investigations by both Cuba and the US.

Cuba’s interior ministry said the vessel entered restricted waters off the northern coast in Villa Clara province, about 100 miles from Florida. Border guard troops approached the boat to identify it, but someone aboard allegedly opened fire, injuring the commander of the Cuban patrol vessel. Cuban forces then returned fire, resulting in four fatalities and multiple injuries among those on the speedboat.

Four people on a speedboat were killed and another six injured in a “confrontation” near Cuba’s coast after those on board the United States-registered vessel opened fire on Cuban troops, according to the Cuban Ministry of the Interior.

The wounded were taken for medical treatment, and Cuban officials said an investigation is underway to determine the identities and intentions of those involved.

Marco Rubio confirmed that US authorities are working to clarify the situation, including determining whether any of the victims were American citizens or permanent residents. He said the US embassy in Havana, along with the Department of Homeland Security and the US Coast Guard, is seeking access to survivors and gathering independent information.

US Vice President JD Vance said the White House is monitoring developments but noted that details remain limited. Meanwhile, several Florida officials, including lawmakers and legal authorities, have called for a full investigation and accountability regarding the use of lethal force.

Cuban officials defended their response, stating that protecting national sovereignty and territorial waters remains a priority. The confrontation comes amid strained relations between United States and Cuba, fueled by economic pressures, oil shortages, and longstanding political tensions.
