Pakistan calls for calm as Middle East tensions intensify

Published on: March 1, 2026 2:47 PM

Pakistan urged restraint and immediate de-escalation during an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, warning that continued escalation could destabilize the Middle East. Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar, expressed deep concern over the rapidly worsening security situation. He emphasized that diplomatic efforts were underway when the recent attacks occurred. Therefore, he called on all parties to show patience and avoid further confrontation.

During his address, the Pakistani envoy condemned the attacks on Iran and stressed that international law must be respected at all costs. He stated that military action during ongoing negotiations undermines peaceful solutions and damages trust between nations. Moreover, he reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the principles of the UN Charter and peaceful conflict resolution. Consequently, he appealed for dialogue instead of force to resolve disputes.

Pakistan also expressed concern over regional stability and condemned attacks affecting several Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Qatar. The representative highlighted that respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity remains essential for lasting peace. In addition, he strongly condemned the reported death of a Pakistani citizen in the United Arab Emirates. Authorities said the individual was killed by falling debris linked to a missile strike.

Furthermore, Pakistan acknowledged and appreciated Oman’s mediation efforts in facilitating US-Iran discussions aimed at reducing tensions. The envoy noted that constructive diplomacy plays a vital role in preventing further violence and protecting civilian lives. He reiterated that escalating military actions risk spreading instability beyond national borders. As a result, he urged regional and global leaders to prioritize negotiations.

Meanwhile, reports indicate continued military exchanges in the region, including missile and drone launches that triggered air raid sirens in Israel under operation “Fateh Khyber.” Explosions were reported in northern areas and major cities, signaling the scale of retaliatory strikes. Iranian military officials confirmed the deployment of multiple missiles and drones targeting key locations. Ultimately, Pakistan’s message at the Security Council emphasized restraint, legality, and urgent diplomatic engagement to prevent broader conflict.
