Putin urges quick diplomatic solution in call with Trump over Iran war

Published on: March 10, 2026 9:19 AM

Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for a swift political and diplomatic solution to the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran during a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump, according to the Kremlin.

The one-hour telephone call took place on Monday and marked the first known conversation between the two leaders since December. The Kremlin said Washington had initiated the discussion amid growing tensions in the Middle East and continuing hostilities in Ukraine.

President Trump says he had “a very good call” with Russia’s Vladimir Putin on Monday, telling CBS News’ @NikolenDC the two leaders discussed the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

According to Putin’s diplomatic adviser, Yuri Ushakov, the conversation focused heavily on the escalating confrontation involving Iran, a key strategic partner of Moscow. Putin emphasised the need for a rapid political and diplomatic settlement to the conflict, warning that prolonged fighting could further destabilise the region.

Ushakov noted that both leaders also addressed developments in the Ukraine war. During the call, Putin reportedly briefed Trump on the situation along the front line, claiming that Russian forces were making significant progress on the battlefield.

In addition to the discussion on military developments, Putin also positively assessed Trump’s mediation efforts related to the Ukraine conflict. Over the past months, multiple rounds of talks have taken place involving Russian, American and Ukrainian officials, but these negotiations have yet to produce a breakthrough toward a ceasefire agreement.

The Kremlin described the conversation between the two leaders as “serious and constructive,” indicating that the discussion covered a broad range of international issues beyond the two conflicts.

Officials said the United States had requested the call in order to address several pressing global matters, particularly the evolving situation in the Middle East.

The latest conversation follows a previous meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska in August last year, where the two leaders held a summit aimed at improving dialogue between Washington and Moscow amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
