Pakistan launches 5G spectrum auction with all major telecom operators participating

Published on: March 10, 2026 1:15 PM

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan’s government has successfully initiated a 5G spectrum auction with the participation of all three major telecom operators, marking a key step toward expanding high-speed mobile connectivity across the country. The participants in the mock exercise included Jazz, Zong, and Ufone, all of which expressed confidence in the auction process, officials said.

Minister for IT and Telecom Shaza Fatima said the government had addressed the major demands of telecom operators, providing a level playing field to ease their financial burdens. “The government aims to create a win-win situation while ensuring the introduction of 5G services,” she said. Sources estimate that the auction could generate between $300 million and $700 million for the federal government.

The auction offers 600 MHz of spectrum, including four new bands. Operators are required to acquire a minimum of 100 MHz each, with a combined minimum of 300 MHz to ensure adequate coverage and quality for both 4G and upcoming 5G networks. The auction mandates acquisition of the 3500 MHz and 2600 MHz bands, essential for 5G operations, while the 700 MHz band is introduced for the first time to support long-distance coverage and basic telephony services in densely populated areas.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Hafeez ur Rehman confirmed that the auction would be conducted digitally, with all operators approving the software and process. “There is no need for the entry of a new telecom company at this stage,” he added.

Officials emphasized that the spectrum auction will significantly improve network quality, reduce congestion, and expand 5G coverage. Policies introduced by the PTA are expected to support telecom services in localized areas over the coming months and years, further boosting digital infrastructure in Pakistan.
