NDMA warns of rain, snow in northern Pakistan

Published on: March 13, 2026 11:30 PM

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning for rain, snow, and thunderstorms in northern Pakistan. The alert covers March 14 to 16, highlighting potential glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and landslides in mountainous regions. Authorities urged locals and tourists to remain cautious in vulnerable areas.

The NDMA said precipitation is expected in Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Cities likely to be affected include Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, Muzaffarabad, Poonch, Chitral, Swat, and Kalam. Heavy snowfall and rainfall could reduce visibility, make roads slippery, and cause temporary travel disruptions.

The authority warned that rising temperatures combined with rainfall may accelerate glacier melt, increasing GLOF risks in Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Gilgit, Astore, and Skardu. Sudden surges in rivers could trigger localized flooding in downstream valleys. Emergency response teams have been advised to remain ready.

Landslides along mountainous terrain, especially on the Karakoram Highway, pose additional threats. Areas such as Diamer, Darel, Tangir, Astore, and Hunza are vulnerable to road blockages and temporary transport disruption. NDMA urged people to follow local authority instructions and adopt precautionary measures.

The NEOC will continuously monitor weather developments and coordinate with provincial authorities. Residents and tourists are advised to stay updated via the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” mobile app for alerts and safety guidance.
