Trump threatens more strikes on Kharg Island, urges allies to protect strait

Published on: March 15, 2026 4:53 PM

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened additional strikes on Iran’s Kharg Island oil hub and urged international allies to deploy warships to secure the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy passage.

With the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran entering its third week, Trump claimed that strikes had “totally demolished” much of Kharg Island and warned more attacks could follow, intensifying tensions in the region.

The escalation undercuts diplomatic efforts, as Middle Eastern allies’ attempts to negotiate a ceasefire have been largely ignored. Tehran, meanwhile, vowed to intensify its response to ongoing airstrikes, signaling a protracted conflict.

The war has already strained oil markets, with Iran effectively shutting the vital Strait of Hormuz. Energy prices have surged, as the blockade threatens global supply chains and heightens economic uncertainty.

Iranian forces have launched missile and drone attacks targeting U.S. bases and Israel, while Saudi Arabia intercepted several drones. Russia is reportedly supplying Iran with Shahed drones, raising further security concerns in the Gulf region.

Trump has called on countries including China, France, Japan, South Korea, and Britain to secure the strait, though none have immediately agreed. Iran’s Supreme Leader insists the waterway remain closed, keeping tensions at a dangerous peak.
