Why US vice president flight used SAM095 call sign sparking curiosity

Vance Weighs in on Disarming Hamas and West Bank Annexation

The aircraft assigned for the visit of US Vice President JD Vance to Islamabad carried the call sign “SAM095,” sparking curiosity about why it was not labeled “Air Force Two.”

Typically, when the US vice president is physically onboard a US Air Force aircraft, it uses the call sign “Air Force Two.” However, in this case, the designation “SAM095” was used, indicating a different operational status for the flight.

“SAM” stands for Special Air Mission, a term used by the United States Air Force for aircraft transporting high-ranking government officials. These missions can include cabinet members, senior military officers, members of Congress, or other dignitaries. The numeric suffix, in this case “095,” represents a specific mission number assigned for operational and logistical tracking.

The use of “SAM095” suggests that although the aircraft—typically a C-32A used for VIP transport—was deployed for a high-level mission, the vice president may not have been onboard for that specific flight segment, or the mission was categorized differently for security or planning purposes.

In aviation protocol, call signs are not just symbolic; they also carry operational significance. They inform air traffic controllers and defense systems about the nature of the flight, its priority, and the level of coordination required. A shift from “Air Force Two” to “SAM” can reflect changes in passenger composition or mission classification.

Experts note that such variations are not unusual and are often linked to security considerations or multi-leg travel arrangements. The designation ensures both flexibility and confidentiality in managing high-profile diplomatic missions.

The “SAM095” call sign, therefore, highlights the structured and adaptive nature of US government air transport operations, especially during sensitive international visits.
