WhatsApp may soon integrate Status updates into chats tab

Published on: April 11, 2026 12:44 PM

WhatsApp's Ephemeral Status Updates May Come Soon to the Main Chats Tab

WhatsApp is reportedly testing a major redesign that could bring Status updates directly into the main Chats tab, in a move aimed at making the feature more visible and widely used.

According to beta build findings on TestFlight and reports from WABetaInfo, the new update suggests that Status content may soon appear as a top carousel within the chat list interface. This would represent a significant shift in how users interact with Status, which has traditionally been a separate section in the app.

The feature appears to be inspired by the Stories format used across other platforms within Meta’s ecosystem, particularly Instagram. Users would be able to quickly access updates from contacts via a swipe-down tray, similar to navigation patterns seen in apps like Telegram.

Under the new design, users will see a horizontal row of Status updates at the top of their chats list. The first option will allow users to post their own Status, followed by updates from contacts ranked based on interaction frequency, ensuring more relevant updates appear first.

Reports also indicate that muted or less frequently interacted contacts will be placed toward the end of the tray, with a separate option to view hidden updates. Like existing Status posts, all updates would disappear after 24 hours and continue to support features such as stickers, text, and music additions.

Although the update is still in testing and not yet publicly available, its presence in both iOS and Android beta versions suggests that a wider rollout could happen soon. However, Meta has not officially confirmed a release timeline.

If implemented, the redesign could significantly increase engagement with Status updates by making them more central to the app’s daily messaging experience.
