Iran says progress made in Islamabad talks despite no final deal

Published on: April 12, 2026 1:11 PM

Iran said progress was achieved during high-level negotiations with the United States in Islamabad, although officials emphasized that reaching a complete agreement during a single round of talks was never expected. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei explained that the complexity of the issues and the broader geopolitical situation required careful negotiations and multiple rounds of dialogue. Nevertheless, he noted that both sides managed to find common ground on several important points during the discussions.

In a message shared on the social platform X, Baghaei stressed that diplomatic agreements involving major security and political issues cannot be finalized quickly. He said no one anticipated a rapid breakthrough because the negotiations involved complex subjects and new proposals that emerged during the talks. According to him, Iran will continue diplomatic engagement to protect its national rights and interests while seeking balanced and fair outcomes in future negotiations.

Meanwhile, Baghaei described the discussions in Islamabad as intense and demanding, saying the Iranian delegation experienced a long and busy day of negotiations. Talks began early in the morning and continued without interruption as mediators from Pakistan facilitated the diplomatic process. During the negotiations, both delegations exchanged multiple written drafts, proposals, and messages in an effort to narrow differences and identify possible areas of agreement.

Furthermore, the spokesperson revealed that discussions covered several major issues shaping regional stability, including the strategic Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s nuclear programme, compensation for war damages, and the lifting of international sanctions. Negotiators also discussed proposals aimed at achieving a complete end to the war in the region and reducing tensions that threaten broader security. These topics, he noted, required careful consideration due to their economic, political, and military implications.

Although negotiators managed to reach consensus on several matters, Baghaei acknowledged that disagreements over two or three key issues prevented a comprehensive agreement. However, he emphasized that diplomatic consultations will continue through ongoing contacts among Iran, Pakistan, and other friendly countries in the region. Such continued engagement, he said, reflects the belief that dialogue remains the most effective path toward resolving complex international disputes.

Concluding his remarks, Baghaei stressed that diplomacy is an ongoing process rather than a single event, describing it as an essential tool for protecting national interests. He also expressed gratitude to the government and people of Pakistan for hosting the talks and providing a respectful environment for negotiations. According to the Iranian official, continued diplomatic efforts and genuine commitment from all sides will ultimately determine whether lasting progress can be achieved.
