IAEA chief calls Iran enrichment decision political

Published on: April 15, 2026 3:45 PM

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency said the duration of Iran’s uranium enrichment limits is a political decision. The statement comes amid ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran over nuclear negotiations. Governments, diplomats, and global security observers are closely watching the stalled talks.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi made the remarks during a briefing in Seoul on Wednesday. He said the length of any moratorium must be decided politically, not technically. His comments highlight the complexity of reaching a nuclear agreement between rival parties.

The statement follows failed weekend negotiations between United States and Iran aimed at ending the ongoing conflict. The talks stalled over disagreements on Iran’s uranium enrichment activities. The United States and its allies argue that enrichment could lead to nuclear weapons development.

Diplomatic sources say both sides remain divided on the duration of any suspension of enrichment. The United States has pushed for a long-term freeze, while Iran has resisted extended restrictions. As a result, progress toward a comprehensive agreement has slowed significantly.

Meanwhile, international pressure continues to mount as regional tensions remain high. Observers say any future deal will likely depend on political compromise rather than technical verification alone. Negotiators are expected to revisit the issue in upcoming rounds of talks.
