Trump hails Iran decision on Hormuz Strait

Published on: April 17, 2026 6:44 PM

US President Donald Trump has thanked Iran for reopening the Strait of Hormuz for commercial shipping. He made the statement on Truth Social, saying Iran had fully reopened the vital waterway. The development is significant as it affects global trade and energy supply routes.

Trump said Iran’s decision to reopen the strait was a positive step for international maritime stability. He publicly expressed gratitude for the move in his social media post. Moreover, he suggested the decision would ease tensions in the region.

Iran had earlier announced the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz following a ceasefire in Lebanon. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the move applies to all commercial vessels during the ceasefire period. Additionally, he confirmed coordination through Iran’s maritime authorities.

According to Iranian officials, shipping will operate under previously announced coordinated maritime guidelines. The decision aims to allow safe passage of commercial ships during the ceasefire timeframe. However, military restrictions and broader security conditions were not detailed.

Analysts say the reopening could stabilize global shipping and reduce pressure on energy markets. However, they note the arrangement remains temporary and linked to fragile regional conditions. Any escalation could again disrupt maritime traffic through the strategic waterway.
